Feeding America Serves Up Meals For The Hungry, While Helping Eliminate Food Waste Across The Nation
With many city and state ordinances across the nation making it necessary for restaurants to donate unused edible items to local food banks, Feeding America has become both a viable and beneficial source of providing food to the hungry, as well as helping our nation curve its food waste problems. Numerous restaurant chains, including Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill and Carrabba’s Italian Grill assist Feeding America with food donations on a daily basis coast-to-coast. In addition, many supermarkets and farms across the country also provide Feeding America with their excess food items, which could have easily gone to the landfills instead and contributed to the growing problem of food waste we are now experiencing in America and across the globe.
In some communities, Feeding America has a “Mobile Farmacy,” featuring fruits and vegetables and other food staples from local agricultural farms and markets. Individuals with food insecurity in these communities can visit the mobile pantry to pick up much needed food items. This is a win-win situation, considering farms are one of the leading producers of food waste across the globe, while more than 38 million people in the United States experienced hunger in 2020, according to the USDA’s latest report on Household Food Insecurity.
In addition, Feeding America has initiated another program called Meal Connect, in which restaurants and catering companies send alerts to volunteers in their community to promptly pick up prepared food items, as soon as the food items become available. The donated items are then taken to a local food pantry.
