Buying A New TV For The Holidays – What Will You Do With The Old One?

Dylan Cherko • Nov 23, 2021

As New TV Sales Surge, So Do Environmental Issues Regarding Electronic Waste

New television sales are expected to reach a major sales peak this holiday season, as more and more Americans purchase new 4K or 8K televisions in time for the holidays. Traditionally, the duration from Black Friday through Super Bowl Sunday is the largest buying period of the year for new TVs, and this year promises to be no different. While you may be contemplating a 65-inch, 75-inch or 85-inch size, an LED or OLED model, or a TV with backlight, you may also want to consider what you plan to do with your current TV.

If your current TV is still in working order, you can either use it in another room in your household, find a friend or family member who wants to take it off of your hands, or donate it to a local area Goodwill or a local charitable thrift shop..

Tossing your old TV into the trash or outside for pickup is not a good idea for many reasons. First and foremost, many cities and states across the nation prohibit the disposal of electronics of any kind in regular trash or recycling programs. In addition, both Plasma and LED TVs contain heavy metals, such as cadmium, mercury, lead and copper. These particular metals present health risks to not only the environment, but to humans as well.

In addition to health risks, you’re also wasting natural resources when you dispose of an old TV in the trash. Both LED and Plasma TVs are crafted with many valuable materials including gold. It is estimated that one ton of e-waste in a landfill contains 100 times more gold than you would find in one ton of gold ore.

When you’re purchasing your new TV, you may first want to inquire if the store you’re purchasing it at has a TV recycling program. Many electronic retailers offer disposal and pickup of your old TV at a minimal cost. What’s more, electronic manufacturers Samsung and Vizio have TV recycling plans in place. Samsung will accept almost any brand of a TV for trade-in, while Vizio has permanent drop-off locations through retailers or nonprofit organizations.
