Do Good Foods Attempts To Combat Food Waste And Climate Change With Their New Food Waste Recycling Program

Dylan Cherko • Oct 19, 2021

As the growing issue of food waste reaches epic proportions in landfills across the nation, Do Good Foods, a meat producer in Bedminster, New Jersey is trying to help eliminate the problem with a new scalable solution that not only assists in curtailing food waste and carbon gas emissions, but ultimately climate change too. Do Good Foods plans to help eliminate a portion of the 48 million pounds of food waste generated each year at grocery stores across the nation.

The company’s “closed loop system” gathers unused fruits, vegetables and meats that would normally be discarded into landfills after food bank donations. The collected food waste is then taken to a processing center in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania where it is then “upcycled” into nutrient-dense animal feed to create sustainable animal protein. The protein is currently being fed to chickens and the completed product is expected to be rolled out to restaurants, grocery stores and other food service locations across the nation in January 2022.

The Fairless Hills processing center is able to convert 160 tons of surplus food from 450 of the nation’s top grocery stores daily. It’s estimated that the Fairless Hills facility will be able to handle 60,000 tons of food waste annually. In addition, Do Good Foods attempts to replicate this processing center model across the nation in the next five years.

Do Good Foods aims to reduce the inordinate amount of food waste in the nation, which currently exceeds over 40% of the food grown annually in America. While the consumer brand is launching carbon-reduced chicken as their inaugural entry, additional carbon-reduced food products are also in the planning stages.
