Aluminum cans are one of the most common items in our trash. In fact, Americans throw away more than $1 billion worth of aluminum each year. But aluminum can be recycled and turned into new products over and over again—in fact, it’s recyclable indefinitely. That’s why recycling aluminum is so important.
Recycling aluminum cans starts with collecting them. Once enough cans have been collected, they are taken to a recycling center where they are sorted by type and color. The sorted cans are then crushed into small pieces and transported to a smelter.
At the smelter, the small pieces of aluminum are heated until they become molten—a process that takes around 60 days. Once the aluminum is melted, impurities are removed and it is poured into large molds called pigs or ingots. These molds help the aluminum cool quickly so that it solidifies into a usable form. From here, the ingots can be made into new products like food cans, soda cans, or even bicycles! It’s amazing what can be made from recycled aluminum.
There are many reasons why you should recycle aluminum cans. For one, recycling conserves energy and natural resources. It takes 95% less energy to recycle a can than it does to make a new one from scratch. And since aluminum is 100% recyclable, recycling it infinitely reduces the amount of waste we produce as a society.
In addition, recycling creates jobs. The aluminum can industry employs over 700,000 people in the United States alone! Recycling also helps businesses save money—it costs less to recycle aluminum than it does to mine for new ore. So not only is recycling good for the environment, it’s also good for the economy as well!
