Recycling Contamination in Commercial Cardboard Containers – What does it all mean?

The recycling industry has changed. Contamination, once allowed by haulers, has ruined the cardboard recycling industry and kept the price of OCC (old corrugated cardboard) under the price per ton levels needed to make it a profitable business. For the last 2 years haulers have tried in many ways to stop the bleeding of profits based on what they can recoup from selling their cardboard. The United States largest hauler is responsible for much of this issue. As the largest seller of cardboard to China there was so much contamination that the Chinese finally said “NO” and demanded much cleaner cardboard. That meant that they now had to process all their cardboard to clean out the contamination. There can be no plastic bags, bottles, Styrofoam, or waxed cardboard. With no one policing the dumpsters you would never see the issues that we, in the waste industry, see on a daily basis.

Packaging Bans – Do they work?

Over the past few months, we have heard a lot about bans on single use plastic and foam items; things like plastic bags, drinking straws, and take out containers.  We have spent some time looking into these bans and whether or not they will actually make an impact on plastic waste.  As of right now, only about 9% of all plastic that has ever been produced has been recycled.

Reducing your Waste Costs with Balers and Compactors

Businesses are always asking us how they can reduce their waste costs.  There are options that are not always apparent.  Our first step is to shop prices with haulers, from there we negotiate with the haulers and sometimes even leave the hauler for another.  In some cases cost avoidance includes getting the client to not overfill their dumpster, close the dumpster lids, and to not place non-recyclable material into recycling dumpsters.  Contamination is bad for you, bad for the haulers and bad for the commodity market.

Commercial Trash Overflow

Over the past few months we have been seeing a lot of overage charges from the various haulers.  As a result we wanted to put together a short post addressing what haulers consider to be overages and ways to avoid extra charges.

40 year old plastic container looks almost new

This image has been making the rounds on social media the past few days, so I decided to do some research to find out just how valid it is.  I was actually surprised to find out that it is legit.

Sustainability in a Box

I don't know about you, but I love watching all of the unboxing videos on YouTube.  There is just something about watching someone so excited about getting a new beauty product or a collectible that they have been wanting that gives me the warm fuzzies. My only real problem with the monthly subscription boxes is all the trash created by the boxes; cardboard boxes, tissue paper, product packaging - it doesn't seem to end.

Small Steps to Food Waste Reduction

We are all aware of the need to be more ecologically friendly, both in our businesses and our homes.  We recycle our paper, our plastic, our glass bottles; but what about our kitchen waste?  Have you implemented a recycling program in your home or office for food waste?  It’s not as hard as you might think.  The easiest way is to start small.  We all have someone in our lives who is involved in gardening.  Here is an easy way to help them make their gardens grow, and eliminate more waste from entering the landfills.
